Army, Navy, and Civilian Law Enforcement Join Together
for Close Quarters Subject Control Instructor Training
at Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office

Virginia Beach, VA  (July 21-24, 2008)

Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office hosted instructors from U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and local Police agencies for Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Close Quarters Subject Control (CQSC) training on July 21-24. Controlled F.O.R.C.E. executive officers and chief international instructors Tony Grano and Don Roberts delivered this instructor certification and development course just days after completing similar training with the U.S. Marine Corps II Marine Expeditionary Force, Special Operations Training Group, Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection (AT/FP) instructor cadre at Camp Lejeune, NC.

Training at Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office covered Level 1: Mechanical Advantage Subject Control and Level 2: Survival Force Reactionary Defense. Participating departmental instructors developed their skills to safely and effectively control non-compliant subjects, and to transfer those skills to other officers within their respective agencies. Participants also learned simple yet effective techniques to survive a surprise attack, including ground techniques for quickly regaining a position of advantage if they are taken off their feet (click here for Ground Escape video).

The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office training room also had a detention cell mock-up available, so Grano and Roberts were able to demonstrate how Controlled F.O.R.C.E. techniques can be used in the correctional environment. Utilizing team tactics and techniques known as Wall Drills™, Grano and Roberts developed participant's skills to control subjects in confined spaces, and to utilize their environment to enhance the effectiveness of their control techniques.

FIGHTING SPIRIT
Instructors Grano and Roberts were honored to re-train Lt. Mark Little from the U.S. Army 1-30th Infantry Battalion. Grano and Roberts first trained and certified Little in Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Level 1 back in 2004 when he attended the 5th Annual U.S.N.S.T.A. National Training Conference in Las Vegas, NV. Since then, Little was deployed to Iraq where he sustained major injuries in an IED attack. As a result of this attack, Little lost both of his legs. In true fighting spirit, Little adjusted to the use of prosthetic limbs and continues to serve his country. Upon completion of Level 2 material on the final day of training, Roberts gave the class an overview of Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Level 3: Combative Counter Measures. After Roberts explained the intense nature of the class and the need to be physically fit to get the most out of the training, Little expressed concern that he may not be allowed to attend a course. "Will you get knocked around, beat up, and bruised in Level 3? Absolutely," responded Roberts, "but will I tell you that after what you have survived you can't participate? Absolutely not." Controlled F.O.R.C.E. salutes Lt. Mark Little and all men and women serving in our nation's armed forces.

Special thanks to Master Deputy William Midgette and the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office.
