MULTI-DISCIPLINE INSTRUCTOR COURSE NEXT STEP FOR U.S.N.S.T.A. IN "BUILDING ONE FORCE"

November 5, 2008

For nearly a decade, the United States National Standards of Training Association (U.S.N.S.T.A.) and its members have been “Building One Force” across the nation through its annual training conference. The concept of “One Force” actually carries two meanings. First, the U.S.N.S.T.A. is working to establish a standard of training that gives all operators a common set of skills and a common language to communicate those skills within a hostile operating environment. Second, the U.S.N.S.T.A. is striving to instill in each operator one fluid force response capability that erases all boundaries between disciplines, such as firearms and defensive tactics.

In 2007, the U.S.N.S.T.A. began implementing its Law Enforcement Training Seminar series (LETS). LETS allowed law enforcement, security, and military agencies to select a customized curriculum of U.S.N.S.T.A. Approved Programs that met their specific training needs. The initial LETS offering, U.S.N.S.T.A. Force Response Detroit ‘07, delivered a custom program consisting of Rapid Assault Tactics (R.A.T.), Controlled F.O.R.C.E., and APG Tactical Handgun to Detroit Metro Police Officers.

Since the first LETS in Detroit, the series has evolved into the U.S.N.S.T.A. Multi-Discipline Instructor Course (MDIC) program. What makes U.S.N.S.T.A. MDIC packages unique is their ability to eliminate the lines between disciplines and present them as one continuous force response capability. By utilizing a “building block” methodology, U.S.N.S.T.A. instructors are able to deliver training where each aspect carries over from one discipline to the next, allowing for the transfer of maximum amounts of content in short periods of time with increased retention.

In October 2008, U.S.N.S.T.A. Instructor Jim Roncal delivered the second MDIC package to Force Protection Instructors with Chenega Security & Protection Services (CSPS). CSPS is a federal security contractor that provides force protection services to military locations across the country. In just seven days at Ft. Huachuca, Instructor Roncal was able to provide the Chenega team with U.S.N.S.T.A. Approved Instructor Programs including Controlled F.O.R.C.E., U.S.N.S.T.A. Basic Defensive Handgun / Shotgun, and U.S.N.S.T.A. OC Aerosol Projector. By utilizing a framework of skills established with the Controlled F.O.R.C.E. content, Instructor Candidates were able to exponentially grow their knowledge and skill to instruct future Force Protection Specialists to maintain situational control within a hostile operating environment.

The success of the U.S.N.S.T.A. MDIC training like that delivered to Chenega is proof that “Building One Force” is not only a viable goal, but further evidence that the U.S.N.S.T.A is the pioneer of a national standard of training: training that covers the entire spectrum of skills needed to protect our military, law enforcement and security personnel.  Furthermore, as the annual U.S.N.S.T.A. conference continues to grow in size and scope, it is clear that this industry is in need of a transformation of training philosophy. With its approach to training, U.S.N.S.T.A. is leading the way.
