Special Series: U.S. Air Force 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron
PART III: Xtreme Pre-Deployment Training

The MOUT Training was the main focus of the week of training, covering both day and night MOUT operations. Controlled F.O.R.C.E. Instructors Frank and Roncal, both United States National Standards of Training Association (U.S.N.S.T.A.) Master Instructors and Subject Matter Experts, each conducted a team (one assigned to Virtual Team, one assigned to Reality Team) through the MOUT Training. Each instructor evaluated his team’s pre-training performance to determine each team member’s experience. Then each instructor became personally involved in building his team up to its best possible performance level.

Communication and remembering the importance of rear cover paid off from the Virtual Training. There was a tangible difference in the performance of the two teams: Virtual Team had the edge when it came to team communication and quickly sweeping/clearing of a hostile environment. Not to be outdone, though, Reality Team picked up on what Virtual Team was doing different and started to enhance their performance to match their competitors. This was an unexpected but welcome outcome of the Virtual Training.

The combined virtual and reality training succeeded in developing the mindset to keep moving through failure and, as one Airmen said, “keep thinking on their feet” as new challenges present themselves.
